Sambell Lodge redevelopment
The Brotherhood of St Laurence plans to redevelop Sambell Lodge, our residential aged care facility on the corner of South Terrace and Gold Street in Clifton Hill.
The plans provide for accommodation for 117 people on low incomes in need of residential aged care. The new building has been designed to take into account the character of the neighbourhood and includes generous setbacks from the adjoining properties and a comprehensive landscape plan.
All parking for Sambell Lodge staff and visitors will be located in an underground car park, with the entrance and exit at the eastern end of the property in South Terrace. Deliveries to the building will also all be via the underground car park.
Current residents of Sambell Lodge will move to their new home once the building is completed. The old building will then be demolished.
The Department of Education and Training is willing to commence negotiations to purchase the vacated land for the expansion of Clifton Hill Primary School in Gold Street. With rising enrolments the school has indicated that it is in dire need of more space.
This is a great opportunity to assist the school in a way that would complement our provision of aged care in a model that the whole of our local community could be proud of.
Sambell Lodge fills a much-needed gap in local aged care. It is a safe and welcoming home for its residents, helping them to grow older in their own neighbourhood and enjoy the vibrant community life of the inner city. There is a crying need for such accommodation locally.
The current Sambell Lodge provides excellent care, but the building is falling behind community expectations for accommodation. The most cost-effective approach is to rebuild it, to the highest of standards.
To be financially viable the facility also needs to be able to accommodate more residents than the current 43. The new facility will provide for the accommodation and care of local residents into the future.
